You're Less Likely to Die in Iraq than at Home in the US

Glenn Reynolds seems to be saying things really aren't so bad as far as US military deaths go in Iraq.

[HOW LIKELY ARE YOU TO DIE WHILE SERVING IN IRAQ? About half as likely as Americans back home, reports the Washington Post. Yeah, there are some caveats -- read the whole thing -- but it's hard to look at these numbers and see the catastrophe that the "527 media" are proclaiming. The Belmont Club has much more discussion.] http://instapundit.com/...

Of course, the comparison Reynolds is pointing to is the deaths per thousand for military personnel in Iraq (.00392) and the general US population (.00842), which includes elderly and sick. Our forces are healthy young individuals who if kept out of harms way, would have a much lower death rate. The Post really should be ashamed of itself for presenting that comparison as "meaningful". http://www.washingtonpost.com/...
